Crema Coffee Shop downtown

Open only since last October, Crema, a great little coffee shop on Fayetteville Street in downtown Raleigh, serves Seattle, Washington coffee brand Gillano, which Tim tells me roasts the finest one to two percent of all available fair trade beans.  Nearby office workers drop in for lunch or coffee or both; some are sitting in a corner where comfy chairs and little tables make a great meeting space.  They seem to be having a conference.  Light jazz is playing in the background; the door is open onto Fayetteville street, which seems to have more foot traffic than vehicles, at least at this time of day–3 PM.  Regulars come in and talk to Tim and the people being the counter, who know many of their names.  Newcomers to Crema (like me) are wandering in, their comments such as “well, that was good,” and “let’s come here again” revealing they are not only first timers, they are charmed.  There is a small flyer taped to the door that says they are closing early tomorrow, at 3 PM, due to an anticipated birth, and on the counter there is a jar holding folded slips of paper, and another sign:  Guess Tim and Lauren’s twins’ combined weight, and win free coffee and lunches.  I asked Tim nosy questions such as, When is she due? (tomorrow!)  How much does she weigh, etc, then wrote my guess and dropped it into the jar.  I am sure I will not win as I am lousy at those kinds of things, but I am enjoying the spirit of this place which is light hearted, jokey and friendly.  The latte tastes wonderful, too.  Unfortunately, they stop making sandwiches at 3 PM.  (I don’t know why this number 3 keeps coming up).  They do serve home made ice cream along with coffee, and many different kinds of sweets, which I will not try today as I have had too many sweets and no food to speak of.  Along the storefront are counters and stools; tables and chairs are in the center of the shop.  This place is busy, but laid back. Out on the sidewalk are tables being well used.  I parked right out front.  That was sheer luck, though.  Someone pulled out, and being a native Washingtonian (as in District, not Seattle) I am an expert parallel parker.

Try Crema; it is one of the newer businesses that have opened up along Fayetteville street in the revitalization of downtown.  They are open Mon-Fri 7 AM to 7 PM; Sat 7 AM to 10 PM; Sun 11 to 5 PM.  I want to hug them just for staying open after 5 on weekdays, and on Saturdays, as the most serious problem with coffee shops in Raleigh, is that they think no one wants coffee after 5 PM, so they all close at 5 or 6.  Show me a dead downtown and I’ll show you not a lack of night clubs, but a lack of diners, coffee shops, convenience stores that are open at night.  For night people, such as myself, who also drink coffee, this is a crime.  I have spent many early evenings walking around or driving around with friends looking for an open coffee shop.  As far as we can tell, there’s only Royal Bean (across from Meredith); New World Coffee House (Pleasant Valley and Glenwood); Cup A Joe (various locations), Third Place (Five Points, crowded and wireless is usually not strong enough, although coffee is!) and Helios (Glenwood South) catering to night people who drink coffee.  If you know any others, tell me (but not outside the Raleigh city line.  I’ll only go so far for coffee).  I favor Larry’s Beans coffee cause it is local and was fair trade organic before that was the cool thing to be; Third Place and New World have Larry’s.

Note–this is not meant to be a comprehensive detailed list of coffee shops good and bad.  It started out as a “Try Crema” — so try it.  If you want to add comments about your favorite coffee shop (in Raleigh) I’d love to hear.  No Starbucks or Caribou please; they are the number one and two highest profit-generating coffee chains in the world.  They can do their own advertising.

Oh wow you are funny David. Counter culture coffee beans picketing and doing drugs!
I forgot to mention Tony’s Cafe–he has been in City Market forever. Tony’s is a great little coffee shop with a good feeling due to Tony’s presence. Walk down the cobblestone street (Blake St) just about any afternoon and you will see Tony sitting outside his cafe in the sun, reading a paper or talking to someone or just watching people walk by, smiling at everyone. That street always makes me feel like I am in Italy (or some movie version of Italy, never actually been there)–with Tony’s Cafe, and that italian restaurant just down the way, also with tables outside, and a farmer’s market in the stall next to the restaurant. No, not the Moore Square Farmer’s market. This is a real old fashioned farmers’ stall. I have always loved City Market especially that one street, which is sunny in the afternoon and feels leisurely.
I forgot Tony’s because he has been closed for awhile, rennovating his place, but is now open and has been reborn–it has become a very cool coffee and wine bar. Now he is open at nights!! He used to close at 5 every day. I discovered Tony’s a long time ago when I absolutely had to have a cup of coffee and had only 10 minutes to find one and get back to work and teach my evening class. And it was after 5, and he’d just closed, but he smiled and let me in, and even though he had emptied out all the brewed coffee and cleaned up and was going home, he told me, with his nice smile, “No one can ever say Tony turned away someone wanting coffee,” and he brewed a whole pot of some gourmet exotic (forgot what kind) fabulous coffee and saved my life.
    So,
Tony’s Cafe and Wine bar–go see it!
    weekdays 9-11 PM
    Saturdays open until midnight!
Go to Tony’s and sit at the new large bar and sample various fine wines by the glass; or sit at a table and have lunch and coffee during the day; check out the cool bathroom with the original city market brick wall exposed so you can see it, behind a sheet of glass. Talk to Tony. He is an interesting person.

    Beth,
The Crema (ice cream, sandwiches and coffee?) in downtown Raleigh is not the same Crema Coffee (Coffee roaster and caffe) as in Cary (the man you are referring to with the VW bus is Kevin).

My family and I own Crema Coffee Roaster & Espresso Bar in Cary, and although the names are similar, we are not affiliated with Crema on Fayetteville St., in Raleigh. I haven’t had the opportunity to check them out yet, but I believe they are a Family Owned, Independent Cafe, like us so I’m glad to see them getting props! It makes me sad to see the Triangle filling up with chains that you can find in “Anytown, Anywhere, USA”. To that I say, “Break Free Of The Chains!! Support Independent Locally Owned Businesses!”

That’s interesting . . . how did two unrelated coffee shops in Raleigh end up with the same name? Is Crema the name of the coffee you roast? But the one on Fayetteville street uses a brand from Seattle, I think. What does Crema mean?
Has anyone seen that bumper sticker around “Friends don’t Let Friends Drink at Starbucks?” I have seen it on several cars here, and in Asheville, would love to know where to get one!

    Rhonda,
Crema is the “cream” of the espresso, that rises to the top of the shot when espresso beans are properly ground, pressed and poured. So, not an uncommon name in the coffee biz. What I’d like to know is, what baristas/coffee bars are doing the best crema art in Raleigh?

Great question! I love those designs. I have found that it depends more on who is working at the time I go in, more than a particular coffee shop–although Helios seems to consistently serve up beautiful crema art –I remember one beautifully shaped pine tree once. Maybe Helios trains all their baristas in this art. New World Cafe on Pleasant Valley rd used to have a few people doing great-looking squiggles. I am always impressed when I find a coffee shop that has good espresso and also does this interesting art. I give a big tip when my latte has a cool design on top. What do they use to make the shape? Is it ground coffee?
How about it–other people out there? Where can you find great crema art in Raleigh?

By ground coffee, I’m not sure…although I have seen baristas use ground cinnamon, mocha, etc. I personally prefer to see them free pour the steamed milk design into my latte, no cinnamon, nothing else. Of course, you have to be civilized enough to sit there and have your latte in their china. Most baristas I know dont waste time with to go cups, but some may. Crema seems to dissapate more quickly in paper cups plus if it has a lid on it, what’s the point? Dont know if we can post links here, but these are some great images from another blog:

Kevin at Hereghty’s Heavenly Delicious puts a design in my crema (in a to go cup!) every morning. Often a timely design (valentine, etc. or just something great)

Hi Again – It’s Caf-fiend from Crema Coffee Roaster & Espresso Bar in Cary.
We researched “Crema” before opening our shop in Cary and it was a month after we opened that we heard about the one on Fayetteville St., and that it had just opened.
Lattegato – WAY TO GO! Your crema definition was right on. Crema also means cream in Spanish. (Lattegato, I know you knew that…) I think the Crema on Fayetteville searves a lot of ice cream, thus their use of “crema” might refer to that… I REALLY need to go check them out. Maybe they’d want us to do a special “Crema Coffee” blend for them!
    INDEPENDENT CREMAS UNITE! HA! HA!
By the way… We do latte art. Kevin, my partner, master roaster & barista, is trying to teach me, but I just haven’t got the hang of it yet. I’ve made a heart of two. Maybe one day I’ll be able to do pretty rosettas too…

I cannot believe Global Village has yet to be mentioned… It’s fantastic, on Hillsborough St across from NC State University, beside Mitch’s Tavern. Across the corner used to be a Starbucks, which GLOBAL VILLAGE IS SO LOVED, Starbucks could *not* stay open and was forced to close!! A local paper ran a front page story the next day with a large photo where someone had graffiti painted “Starbucks, You Got Served!” on the wall.
Anyhow, the coffee is fairtrade and organic, with a very large selection… including organic teas. Their paninis are *excellent* and made for meat-eaters, vegetarians, and even vegans. Their pastries are divine. And Mike Richie, the owner, gets to know his customers individually and is fantastic all around. I’ve personally seen him insist a stranger take his umbrella for the day because she was soaked and freezing on a stormy day.
The place is well loved and popular, but stays quiet and serene. On weekends they sometimes have live local musicians.
During the SUMMER ONLY they close at 6pm. This is because with NCSU closed, it costs too much to operate the store later. During August through May, Mike keeps the coffeehouse open until 9 or 10 and even later on weekends.
GLOBAL VILLAGE is an excellent excellent little haven… with all tips going to Rainforest Preservations as well (you can read about it in the store)… fantastic for lunch in summer, fantastic all day and evening in fall, winter and spring…
    Check it out :)

Responding to an earlier question, Morning Times uses Carborro Coffee Company beans. I think Tony’s used Larry’s but can’t remember.

    Hmmm
Judging from the # of comments on this page, maybe Raleigh is a Coffee Town after all! Quick someone open up a coffee shop downtown that stays open past 7 PM. Maybe there’s hope yet! Downtown Raleigh just may become another Charlotte. What a worker bee hive. All the drones go home at sunset and the town dies and goes dark.

Raleigh’s Larry’s Beans are awesome. These are my favorite triangle locations that carry Larry’s:
Tony’s Cafe (city market, downtown Raleigh), Third Place (five points), Rockford (Glenwood South), Reverie (Hillsborough St), Coffee and Crepes (Cary Crossroads), Java Jives (Cary, various), New World Cafe (North Glenwood, pleasany valley), Taylor’s BP (upper six forks),

Those are some of my favorites too. They all have good coffee (of course because they all serve Larry’s Beans) I’ve been meaning to say a little about Coffee & Crepes in Cary Crossroads. I’m not in Cary very much but whenever I happen to be in the Crossroads area I try to stop in C & C (which is fortunately or unfortunately located next to my one shopping vice–CDs–a huge CD store is on the corner). C & C has the best crepes, all kinds: fruit/sweet/desert types and the kind that has veggies and cheese for a meal and all of them are interesting combinations of ingredients, taste wonderful, and you can get them in whole wheat. They also have great wireless, strong signal. I think they close at 7 or 8 though, sigh. At least they don’t close at 5 or 6 as some do.
Tony’s I already wrote about above somewhere and his cafe is lovely. Someone else wrote about the BP which is kind of awesome, need to go check them out, gas station with Larry’s Beans coffee!
The others I’ve been to (except the ones in Cary) and they all have good coffee and good vibes, especially New World in Pleasant Valey which I’ve been going to for 9 yrs–it is near where I live, and also is the most comfortable coffee shop I’ve ever been in–(note to those who long to take your shoes off at the end of the day and put your bare feet up as you work on your laptop–you can do that here and no one even blinks. It’s that laid back. Good music, great internet, and friendly staff that know what they are doing)
But what is Rockford? The only coffee shop in Glenwood South I know about is Helios–the exception to the rule that coffee shops that don’t serve Larry’s don’thave good coffee–also Crema is an exception).

I haven’t tried Crema yet. I have tried most of the other downtown Raleigh coffee shops. I’m excited about Spy Raleigh opening soon. It will have a club and coffee shop. I went in and met an owner and the manager. Here’s what I found out: http://www.jefftippett.me/spy-raleigh-new-club-and-coffee-shop-in-downt
