Ace is the Place

When visiting Seaboard Station (off Peace Street) this weekend on my weekly jaunt to Logan’s, Seaboard Wine and CCG, I stopped into the new Ace Hardware to check it out. It was much more than I expected – even my husband, who grew up in the hardware business, was very impressed with the selection (loads of ‘total guy’ stuff) and customer service. In addition to a great selection of typical hardware store items, they have Benjamin Moore paint, outdoor furniture, kitchen stuff and small appliances. Even the decor was kind of cool emoting an interesting retro feel with modern day amenities.

I honestly believe that this will save OTB trips to Lowes and Home Depot and will serve as a boom to downtown residents to be within a few blocks of hardware (Sorry Briggs, but you moved and have limited weekend hours which tends to hinder weekend warriors).  I also believe that many of the items that are on my Tar-ghay list can now be purchased at Ace – whoda thunk it? I’ve heard there will be a grand opening towards the end of April and the opening of a garden center for both plants and rentals/equipment. Plus, they have free popcorn and a really cool vintage truck wrapped with a Seaboard Ace advertisement. If you haven’t been there yet, I strongly encourage you to stop by.

I will give them a try but I have to recommend Briggs Bros. on Hillsborough Street. If i’m unsure how to do something or exactly what I need, they always steer me the right way. If I go to Lowes and I ask for advice, I inevitably wind up making a return trip or two because they’ve sold me the wrong crap.

I meant to write Burke Bros. I’ve never found Briggs to be very helpful – or to be open when I need hardware.

I too was surprised by Ace recently. I needed some small metric machine screws and wing nuts, and after trips to Lowes and HD turned up nothing in the incredibly disorganized and trashed drawer system they use for such parts, I remembered that there was a new Ace at the corner of Alexander and Page down past Brier Creek.
I walked onto the hardware aisle and was instantly helped by someone who knew exactly where everything was in their small box system. They had an amazing array of weird parts and everything I had wasted so much time looking for elsewhere.
To be honest, since the Ace on Six Forks closed, I had really assumed they were gone from the area.

What ever happened to the Miller’s Ace on Glenwood.
I am glad I don’t have to go to Cary anymore for a screw!

This is the best addition to downtown Raleigh since I’ve lived there (2004). I’ve already gone to ACE twice, and I’ve found the employees very friendly and helpful. Such an improvement over driving to Lowes, Home Depot, or Briggs Bros.
Somebody did their homework with this.

This store is great. It is never too crowded, there are always happy staff willing to assist you and they have new technology in the paint dept that can customize paint to your needs to match fabrics, etc…. Also, I love that the manager is a young woman and not an old timer! And…she knows what she is talking about when she is providing assistance to customers! I don’t live downtown but I will support this store b/c of the positive experience I have had both times I have shopped there.

I’ve been to ACE the past 3 weekends, have found everything I need and as stated in previous posts the staff has been very friendly/accommodating, pretty knowledgeable for the most part.
Needed some screws and extension ladder this past Sunday, pulled up at 12:30 and was a bit dismayed that their Sunday hours are 1:00 to 6:00. Headed off to Capital blvd. to brave the weekend mess at Lowe’s, at least the hot dogs out front are worthwhile.
Short story long, there are a TON of Raleighites (sp?), (just about everyone in our circle of friends and fam) who don’t attend church, don’t hold Sunday sacred as a day where everyone congregates over supper, and at times would appreciate a cocktail at the end of the weekend (Sunday again) to unwind and prepare for our weekly grind.
Sunday options for most amenities pre-noon are just not available in Raleigh, particularly so ITB it seems – And good luck finding a restaurant open should an anniversary or planned night out fall on a Sunday.
A bit of an over-rant here perhaps (and I do love/appreciate a solid ITB hardware store), would just like to see more new biz that caters to the less-traditional southern crowd/style, business should evolve with culture. Love many southern traditions but Raleigh is more diverse than ever and I wish local biz would cater appropriately to that new crowd and appreciate our spending power and that we are a critical component of their potential revenue and ultimate success.
