Sad Day for Raleighing

It is with an extremely heavy heart that I come to you with the news that Dana has decided to discontinue his work on Raleighing.com.  As I am sure all of you know, Dana is an amazingly intelligent person who truly has unique, insightful, respectful, and helpful views on our wonderful city.  His astounding grasp on many subjects along with his inexplicable ability to stay abreast of so many important Raleigh issues has been a foundation of this site and is surely the primary reason our readership has grown to such heights.  It is absolutely one of the motivations behind my conceptualization of the site and the work I have put into it since.

The impact to the future of Raleighing is yet to be determined.  I’ll of course need a little time to decide exactly what approach I’d like to take.  Demands from my non-Raleighing life (i.e. most of my life) have made it very difficult to write lately but hopefully things are returning to normal for me now in that regard.  I should have some idea of next steps shortly.  Your patience is appreciated.

So, please join with me in saying “thank you” to Dana for sharing his thoughts, insights, time, and commitment over the past 18 months.  He will absolutely be missed.

Luckily for me, he and I also happen to be good friends so I don’t have to say goodbye.

–Chris

Thanks for the encouraging words, Ernest. I always enjoy your contributions to the conversations here.
But, let me clarify something for everyone. While I won’t go into speaking for Dana and his reasons behind deciding to leave Raleighing, I will say that the negative commenter(s) are not his primary reason. As far as I know, they aren’t even a reason at all.
Thanks again for the kind words,
    Chris

Very Sad – but very understandable
I hope you can keep it going even if it is scaled down.

Dana, thank you so much for all the leads in Raleigh life that my girlfriend and I wouldn’t have known without you and this site. I know Chris will do a great job in your absence.
Thanks for always emailing me to Dana, on responses to questions that I had about our area.
I hope this decision does not lead to the fall of Raleighing, because honestly it is one of the few things Raleigh has going for it. A great online community.

Dana you will definitely be missed on this site. It was a pleasure reading this site for the last year or so. Hopefully, this will not be the end of the Raleighing site. The leads you have provided on this site have been a great resource for me.
Good luck in your future endeavors!

This is a sad, sad day… I’m really sorry to hear the news. Its become a ritual of mine to check in with Raleighing at least once a day. I too appreciate the fact that y’all responded to our emails. I can’t even imagine the amount of time that y’all have put into this . Thank you for taking it on. Speaking for a whole lot of folks, we’re sad to see you go! Somehow, someway, Raleighing must continue. Sign me up!

Sad times… Dana, thank you so much for all that you put into this site. It has been a great ride so far. Chris, I’m confident you can pick up the pieces and make this site better than ever. I’m anxious to see how Raleighing takes adversity and runs with it.

Thanks for the clarification, Chris. I am sorry for pre-assuming the reasons behind Dana’s departure from Raleighing. Nevertheless, this site will have to go on and continue to be a great source of information, as it has been for a very long time. I have faith in you, Chris ;)

Thanks so much for all of the kind thoughts. My year and a half with this website have been a blast and I look forward to even better days ahead for Raleighing.
Chris and his wife are some of our closest friends and I never want that to change. Chris and I have slightly different approaches to making a great site. In order for a venture between close friends to work, however, both parties need to be completely comfortable with the collaborative approach. I didn’t feel quite comfortable enough and didn’t want to jeopardize our friendship in any way.
A second (and probably more important) factor is that I wasn’t having enough fun to justify the time given the current challenges I am facing professionally and personally. I haven’t been silent from here out of anger, just incredibly busy.
I will be a 100% fan of what Chris decides to do here and will continue to proudly wear my Raleighing t-shirt (if you don’t have one, you definitely need one – it’s a great conversation piece). Replacing me here won’t be all THAT hard. Let’s face it, a chimp could have posted the better part of what I’ve posted.
In fact, maybe some of you will start your own Raleigh-based sites. I’ve always said that we’d be a better place to live if we had 95 Raleighings. RSS thread monitoring is so efficient that it is easy to follow tons and tons of blogs. The real competition is that which distracts people from making Raleigh better. We all need to stay focused and continue the unprecedented momentum Raleigh currently enjoys.
In the meantime, y’all go floss each day and quit putting so much acid and sugar in your mouths!!

Well, I am sad to see Dana’s contributions to Raleighing come to an end, but I hope the site does not go away entirely. (hint, hint, Chris) :) I actually have to credit Ernest Pecounis’ wonderful web site at raleighmsa.com for leading me here where I discovered Raleighing on his links page. I think the real value of this site is that is makes for wonderful water-cooler type of topics and discussion – what’s hot, what’s happening, what’s newsworthy, and so forth. I might have missed out on the Monet exhibit at the art museum and a few cool restaurants to check out had it not been for postings I’ve read on here. My hat’s off to a job well done, and in hopes of seeing the stream of interesting (and sometimes overlooked) topics continue here somehow!

I really thought that Dana did a great job on the site. I’m sorry that the collaboration didn’t work out, but I hope that Raleighing will keep going. Good luck to both of you.
