Herons Set to Open

Herons RestaurantWord is that Herons in Cary’s very, very new Umstead Hotel is set to open on January 15th.  As most, if not all, of you know, the Umstead is on the SAS campus off Harrison Avenue which means it is, of course, funded by the Goodnights.  Finally, we’ll have a 4-star hotel in the area which has been needed for quite some time.  Hopefully, Herons will pull its weight in that department as a fantastic restaurant is certainly a requirement of a boutique hotel, especially one which sits quite a ways from anything else worth noting (i.e. not in a city/cultural/entertainment center of the area).

To validate the opening date, I went to the Umstead website and attempted to make a reservation for a hotel room.  The first day it will allow me to do so is the 15th, which just reiterates the opening date of the restaurant.  We reported a while back that accomplished chef Phil Evans had been tapped to helm the kitchen and I personally cannot wait to give the place a try.

Admittedly, I am a Raleigh snob who has a near-insurmountable repulsion to partaking of just about anything in Cary (save the breathtaking Koka Booth Amphitheatre).  But, I do love to keep tabs on the Goodnights and believe wholeheartedly in our city’s ability to maintain high-end hotels.  Sure, I wouldn’t have put our first 4 star on the SAS campus, but hopefully it will be met with enough enthusiasm and business to reinforce recent decisions made by Westin and Marriott, and attract even more to our opportunity-rich city.

We’ll report back about the restaurant soon as we’ll surely be giving it a sample early on.  Plus, my wife and I will definitely be scheduling a date night at the Umstead Hotel and Spa soon…  Makes me relaxed just thinking about it!

Sounds like another overpriced hotel restaurant designed to squeeze expense account funds from business travelers. Yipee.

I’m excited about the Hotel and rooting for it’s success. I believe the location will work in their favor. The Execs that will frequent such a facility want easy access to neighboring business (Research Triangle) and the Airport. The fact that there isn’t a great resaurant nearby will only help Herons IMHO.

I had just started reading your website and was considering making a nice donation to your ‘tipjar’ but your idiotic comment about your “near-insurmountable repulsion to partaking of just about anything in Cary” means I will be removing you from my bookmark list. I lived in Raleigh for years and it’s rediculous “snobs” like you that make this area have the collective maturity level of a kindergarten playground.

Wow, that’s one awesome sense of humor you’ve got there! Really made me sorry for making that statement. No, really. You make me want to pack up and move to the beige house next door to you!

The hotel/restaurant/spa were just open this weekend for a dry run but it was “invitation only”. My friend was invited by Mrs. Goodnight to stay free at the hotel but the spa services were not gratis. She said the place is gorgeous, modern, and wonderful overall! It should do quite well here.

C’mon guys, relax. First off, Raleighing is a great site and you shouldn’t stop visiting because you can’t take a joke. Secondly, Raleigh wouldn’t be nearly as vibrant of a place without Cary (and vice versa). The wonderful thing about the Triangle is you can live in a beige house or in a high-rise condo and still be within 10 minutes of the other style. And besides, once I-540 is completed, almost all the Cary folk will be “ITB” :-)

I know I’ll get hell for even suggesting this, but nevertheless I’ll put it out there: does anybody think that the hotel looks not unlike a renovated 1980s Ramada Inn?? I drove around the entrance yesterday and the hotel’s outer appearance (I didn’t go inside) seemed much too linear and plain to merit that of a four- or five-star hotel and some $100 million of investment. Wouldn’t Ann Goodnight have wanted to go for something more daring, more innovative, or at least more classical in her design if she was going to shell out all that money? Thoughts from design-savvy people appreciated.

I am not design-savvy, but from the pictures I’ve seen I have to agree. I was not impressed by the exterior. I was expecting something to make me say “wow.”

I have eaten there twice already, and it is above and beyond the majority of restaurants in the Triangle in terms of decor, service, atmosphere, and of course food. You feel like you have been transported to a “real” city the moment you walk in the door. I love Raleigh, but we have needed someplace like this.

from the outside its a total bore. i guess they spent all the money on the inside. certainly not as nice looking as the sienna or the carolina inn in chapel hill.

I totally agree with the rather ordinary exterior. It may have been intentional to let it sort blend in with the surroundings and not draw attention to itself in order to increase the presence of its (from what I hear) luxurious interior.
The aspect I find a bit odd is the pond in front that looks like an oversized mud puddle. Couldn’t they have enhanced or reshaped that? Build a stream or waterfall or fountains … something.

yeah, i was surprised that stayed that way from the beginning too. i kept expecting it to evolve into something much nicer than a puddle.

I was lucky enough to be invited to dinner before they opened and then had lunch on Monday.
On the dinner menu, don’t miss:
Lobster App-cooked so perfectly, it was almost translucent. It will be hard to eat lobster anywhere else.
Charred Endive salad, Ahi tuna, Juicy Roasted chicken w/ House made Duck Sausage, and Dessert-Hurricane Stewie. Yum.
Corn Chowder on the lunch menu tasts like summer and the presentation impressive.
Service is very attentive, yet not intrusive. Flatware disappeared and reappeared without my noticing. The Sommelier is very helpful, not pushy. Many of these servers have made waiting tables their profession. Perfect? Close, but not yet. The bar service needs some work, and it took a bit for us to get the check.

Greetings from Los Angeles, where we amuse ourselves with reports from the field on the hinterland’s obsession with Trader Joes.
Notes on the Heron’s food photography:
    Charred asparagus? (yawn.)
    Seared tuna (golf claps.)
Tartare (ho-hum, something for the bubba ladies who lunch.)
It’s Alice Waters gone low country. I bet something gets a dusting of cornmeal.
