Cowher Now in Raleigh

Bill_cowher
Earlier today N.C. State alumnus Bill Cowher resigned from the head coaching job of the Pittsburgh Steelers. WRAL is reporting that Cowher is already back in Raleigh with his family. Perhaps he can take over the 850 the buzz timeslot for the departed Steve Logan.

J.T. "The Brick" on Fox Sports News tonight was contemplating what pressure this puts on Panthers coach John Fox with "Cowher in town".

Come on — how can you not love this guy? And I’m not even a Steelers fan. I think I really jumped on board the Cowher bandwagon when I saw him stuff the polaroid in the official’s front pocket. Players loved him, owners, fans … I think he’s actually doing a telecast this weekend for the playoffs.
He’d be a great substitute for Logan, who will certainly be missed.

So how long is Tom O’Brien’s contract with NC State?

No way will he coach the Panthers. He wants no less than $8 million a year which good ol boy Richardson isn’t going to pay. Maybe Washington or Dallas are in his future.

Wonder if he’d do something like become AD/Head Coach at NCSU.
Tom O’Brien has a 7-year incentive laden contract w/ NCSU.

Yeah, I was just teasin’ with the NC State mention. While Cowher (and every Wolfpack fan) will always love the idea of him coaching for his alma mater its simply not going to happen. The NFL is his playground and a playground where he is one of the bullies. Daniel Snyder will likely throw $8 million at Cowher next year after Gibbs “retires.” Snyder is apparently a huge Cowher fan and we all know he loves to overspend. I just hope Cowher doesn’t take on a GM/coach position.

No doubt I’m in the minority here, but I don’t know if I see Cowher returning to coaching – at least not in the NFL. It would have to be an incredible amount. Fact is, he’s had a strong desire to come back and relax in Raleigh and he’s finally getting his wish. I don’t see him wanting to uproot and leave anytime soon.
Does that make State an option for him in the future? Possibly. He wouldn’t be doing it for the money though, State couldn’t afford to pay him anything remotely close to what the NFL could offer.
That’s not to say he wouldn’t have a change of heart in 4 or 5 years and return to the NFL… using Joe Gibbs as an example. I think his mind is set on indefinite retirement and relaxation with his family for now.

After a half year of “Honey do this” and “Honey do that”, he will call the Redskins and have a temp home up there. Men like this don’t relax for long…..

Being a Giants fan lets hope he doesn’t do that. However, I do think he will be coaching soon it is what he loves and although I’m not a Steelers fan how can you not love this guy?

Until Snyder sells the Skins (which is no time soon) I would advise Cowher not to jump on that ship. Which, by the way, I’m sure Bill is keenly aware of.
Wait for the Giants job to open up in a year. Great ownership, highest profile, I think Eli will be serviceable in a couple years and Cowher gets the most out of EVERY player he come in contact with. I almost guarantee that is what giving the 1 year extension on his contract to Coughlin is all about.
