Hudson Belk Men to Fill Lord & Taylor Space

Belks_logo
A long-time employee of Hudson Belk just assured me that our earlier story is, indeed, a "done deal". Hudson Belk’s men’s department will be filling both levels of the former Lord & Taylor space in February of 2007. If anyone from Crabtree Valley Mall would like to refute this information, please feel free to join with the on-top-of-it Coyote Ugly people and set us straight! Here’s the story we ran last week concerning this topic:

Ever since Lord & Taylor pulled out of the South, and thus Crabtree, many theories have swirled about how Crabtree will fill the two-story anchor space. We’ve reported the rumor of Bloomingdale’s possibly filling the space, and discussed plans to change the space into additional ordinary mall space. Renderings of that plan are still online.

One of our readers, however, insists that Hudson Belk is going to move their Men’s Department to at least some of the old L&T space. While this is a sad scenario, it is plausible. The space is a relatively small space for a major anchor, however the entire ground floor is slightly larger than the collective men’s departments at Hudson Belk. Given the bludgeoning that brick-and-mortar retailing is receiving from internet competition, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Crabtree have/choose to stick with one of their tried and true, original tenants. The second story could be developed into more mall space, a new food court, or whatever.

I really do get it…@ Tyson’s Corner 2 weeks ago…and I’m not alone. How many friends do you know who are going to NYC, DC, Atlanta, etc. over the holidays and shopping? There is money here, and disposable income that is being spent elsewhere because the offerings in our department stores leave much to be desired. “Bilk” is known for selling past-season merchandise @ retail–not even on sale. I like to touch the merchandise, so I will always shop in
stores @ Crabtree and Triangle, but wouldn’t be great to see some of those stores turn into “flagship” stores.

I’m encouraged by this move… of course only because I’m hoping it leads to a decent “Tall” selection. It would be nice to be able to buy pants and shirts off the rack instead of going into a store and trying on sizes that are close to what I need and having to guess online. “Big & Tall” departments really end up being just “Big” with cheaper brands and elastic waistbands. Ralph Lauren has a great Tall line and this expansion could do something for its real lack of presence. The shoe department drastically needs more space too… perhaps now I can hope to regularly walk in and be able to purchase 14/15 EE’s. Heck, even the standard RLPolo section severely lacks in selection. It would be nice simply to count on there being on-hand stock of the classic oxford cotton button-down in white, blue, striped, pink, yellow, and green, in all sizes, but the stock is usually picked over and limited.

Well, not to bring this matter up again… but I really would have loved to have seen an Ikea pop up in that space… :) lol

Ha ha. I do love Ikea, but you do realize that their stores are 2.5 times the size of the average Home Depot?
Just to throw something out there: According to the N&O;, which sometimes doesn’t mean much, John Kane is looking at the airport outlet mall. Now what if he does get it? Does he have enough clout to pull in something like ikea to replace the mall? Just a thought.
Kane owns University Mall in Chapel Hill. My dream is for him to convince A Southern Season and Cameron’s to open stores in North Hills, but I’m not counting my breath. (Just gotta throw that thought out into the energy field).

i’m not sure how any one store would deal with kathleens issue. i too am guilty of going on shopping trips to dc, but not necessarily to buy better stuff; just to go somewhere different. if they have better/different stuff there, well then we both win. i think hechts was billed as a “flagship” store after they re-modeled or something, it didn’t make me go in there more. i’m sure there is an answer out there somewhere, i just don’t know it. but if saks is cutting their hours, then obviously selling expensive clothing isn’t the solution.

The Lord & Taylor men’s department filled the entire downstairs of that space. That went well. Again, they sold the exact same merchandise as Belk and Hechts (and Dillards.) The disappointing thing is that you kind of have to believe they tried to get a better tenant(s) but couldn’t. This could not have been one of their top plans for the space. L&T; announced over a year ago that they were leaving so either management needs a buy themselves a clue or the top stores don’t see Raleigh as a profitable market.

At first I was a little confused as to how this made sense but the more I think about it I like the idea. The L&T; space is actually a lot amaller than it appears and will allow Belk to possibly expand some of the upper end name brands (Kenneth Cole, Theory, 7 for all Mankind, etc.)carried in the womens section to the new mens area.

Too bad they weren’t able to land an H&M.; There had been a rumor that we’d get one someday.

I was hoping they would put a Southern States in that space. Have you guys ever been to the ones in Richmond or Fuquay? Most upscale southern towns have them. You can pull right up and load a dog kennel or chicken coop in your SUV.
Agri-supply is for the Johnston county crowd. Southern States is much more upscale and fitting for a Raleigh mall.
Hey! Don’t call me a snob! It’s just what we are!

In reading all of these great views, I find a few points of fact missing from the opinions. People, rest assured the management of Crabtree threw offers out there to attract every retailer under the sun, that’s common business sense to make money by bringing in a new name. NO ONE was buying because of the lack of business and financial success of the area’s other “flagship” or higher end names that are failing miserably. Doesn’t it make sense that if Neimans thought Raleigh was the right market, they would have been in that space a year ago? Or for that matter, any other name that thought they could compete in this area. It is true that this area has canibalized itself with big-box retail and mall space, but we are also a population that is growing at a rate that exceeds any national average. What we buy and where we buy it will always be a matter of personal choice. The best we can do for our local economy is to keep as much of our “disposable” income in the area, and in doing so; hopefully keep telling the retailers that are surviving here, like Belk, what we want so we don’t have to travel to DC or Atlanta for any other reason than a change of scenary. The more space a retailer like Belk has, the better selection we can command. I would like to see more assortment of brands in the men’s area as they carry in women’s, but without more space I can’t imagine that would ever happen. I look forward to the day that I can truly find everything from designer brands to cost-effective bargain basics in the same building. If Belk makes that happen then they will surely gain the success that they deserve. As for the comment about Belk selling last season fashions, get a better source- it’s not true! Maybe you just wait for the discount to be so deep that it’s been around a while before you see it, and that’s fine if that’s what you’re shopping for, but no need to make Belk out as the bad guy for no reason-

i’m all for supporting the local economy. and i love going to the mall. but when there are so many retailers out there that have “catalog/internet only” items, or even worse “catalog/internet only” prices, whats the point of going out? sure there are some things that i like to see before i buy it, but if i can, i go to the store, seen the item, then go and buy it online. i know thats not supporting the local economy, but thats the fault of the company, not the consumer. if local store operators are hurting because of it, well then, do something about it. i don’t know what, i wasn’t a business major, so i don’t have the answer. but it definately a problem that needs solving.
perfect example: needed a new digital camera. got money for christmas. went to best buy, found the camera i wanted for $300, found the exact same camera on amazon for $225. i love best buy, but i’m not going to pay an extra $75 just to support their store. i could have supported the best buy company by purchasing it on their website for $250, but still, might as well save more. even if i did buy it from bestbuy.com, i still wouldn’t be supporting the local economy.
anyhow, i’m sick and rambling. but i think the point is, the consumers may not be supporting their local economies the way they should, but we are definatly not the only reasons that stores have to shift gears a bit. some of them are being bitten by their own companies.

I have to say that ‘Hudson’ Belk Crabtree still ranks #1 in my book. After 30 some odd years of shopping in the Raleigh area – starting out at Cameron Village and the old North Hills then Crabtree – ah yes, can’t forget the Belk Downtown (what great sales they had in the basement). Crabtree really fit the bill and has still, even with the occasional flooding, continued to improve itself. TTC(whatever), ‘Cary Village Mall’(oh yes, Cary Village Mall), and Southpoint have all Belk, nonetheless, Belk at Crabtree continues to try the bigger name brands and still keeps the old standards that were the hit back in the day. I think expanding Belk would be a wonderful idea – yes, a larger more well known name would be nice in the L&T; space but only because it carries a larger selection of the name brands that Belk currently carries. I say the people we need to be talking to are the buyers at Belk – I agree their South Park store is wonderful but I know Belk Crabtree Men’s and Women’s Departments can be just as fabulous if not better, if the buyers would wake up!!

    Good Afternoon, Good People!
Well, the staff in the menswear department at the Crabtree Hudson Belk accomplished an extraordinary feat this weekend. For 12 hours on Saturday night, they moved the rest of the floor stock from the old store into the new location. The mannequins were still yet to be dressed, but overall they did a pretty remarkable job. The only thing missing was the shoe department, and that was held up by a late shipment from their supplier. So, I suspect there will be an official grand opening sometime soon, but for now they’re in their new home. Go out and take a look.
(BTW: For those who remember the old Lord & Taylor upstairs, I’m curious as to how much of the interior was recycled and used for Hudson Belk?)
    Peace

dbearhug: Hudson Belk recycled a lot of the interior finishes of Lord & Taylor. Except for an awkward spot where the escalator well was that now towers for no reason in particular, the overall effect is relatively seamless.
I think any real discussion of what Hudson Belk Crabtree should become needs to be tabled until the renovations at the main store are complete in the fall. Nobody really knows specifically what they have planned other than some department shifting.
Until then, if you have suggestions, call the store manager. If you don’t like the store, the only way for it to begin to get better is if somebody in influence knows how you feel.
