Amato Out

TorredamatoNorth Carolina State University fired football coach Chuck Amato tonight. Athletic Director Lee Fowler said that the coaching search will begin immediately. That search obviously begins with one "Bill Cowher". Cowher, head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, is an NCSU alumnus and recently moved his family into a large NoRa home. The defending Super Bowl champ Steelers are currently 4-7, but not completely out of the playoff race with 5 games remaining on the schedule. That the NFL regular season ends on December 31 may mean no word on a new coach for over a month, which may negatively impact recruiting in the short run.

    No way will Cowher take this job. May want to aim a little lower ala the basketball coach search.

    And the steelers are out of the playoff picture.
    I heard that Cowher also turned down a new 7 year deal from pittsburgh. but DanR’s right, set the sights lower. And be realistic.

    Cowher is not an unrealistic option. Unlikely? Yes. But not unrealistic.
    Chow is a possibility but the ASU job opening will all but kill any shot at him.

    The only way Cowher takes this job is if Cowher wants to. There’s no amount of money that will bring him in (read: he just turned down a $6.5M/year contract extension w/ the Steelers). That being said, I don’t see any reason for NC State to aim lower in this search, top notch facilities, top dollar payroll, national recognition, prominent place in a (currently) weak “football conference”, no Coach K or Roy Williams next door, so this search does not equate at all to the BBall search. Cowher, Chow, Shula, Johnson…the options are out there.

    I love the Cowher possibility and would love to see it happen. Let’s recap — won Super Bowl (pinnacle of profession), former student/athlete, love the area as evidenced by the mansion I just bought, still young, Steelers are out of the playoff picture, love the teaching aspect of coaching that the college game presents, another challenge … oh and there is a vacancy at the college for a Football Coach. Hmmmmm, that doesn’t sound at all like State wouldn’t have a chance at landing Cowher. I honestly don’t know why certain entities (850 and 680) completely dismiss it, right off the bat.
    Come on Bill, let’s see how far the spit can fly at Carter Finley! And hey, if not Cowher — there’s always Logan.

    I very seriously doubt that Logan is interested in ANY college fball job right now.
    Now, what I’m scared of is State going after Skip Holtz after ECU finally has a good team again.

    I’m thinking State is going to want to aim pretty high – not to knock the ECU folks, but with Butch Davis settling into his digs at UNC, I don’t think Pack fans are going to want to settle for anyone less than a top-tier, proven coach – and sorry, that’s not Skip Holtz (Pirate fans, you can breath easier now) – unless money becomes an issue, in which case they’ll then have to be creative with their candidate search. The big problem is, there are a lot of attractive vacancies at the college level right now (not the least of which is Miami) and really not a lot of great available candidates.

    I hope not Logan. I don’t want any football program taking away my lunchtime entertainment!
    It turns out that the firing was timed perfectly. Since the Butch Davis press conference today, the media has been all over the BD story, not Amato.
    Alright, y’all. Surely SOMEBODY gets the joke in the picture here!

    Why has no-one mentioned Norm Chow? He made Rivers a hero and then did the same for Leinart at USC… Now he’s biding his time with the Titans and is ripe for the picking. Fowler better move fast because Chow is on a lot of radars and won’t last long. If we go through the same problems we had finding a basketball coach then Fowler should be next to go.

    Agreed, I don’t think the Titans were very accomodating to Chow as they chose Vince Young over his groomed Lienart. I imagine a change (read: return of) scenery would be good for Norm, I’m sure the Wolfpack would welcome him with open arms (and open wallets).

    The only problems with Chow are:
    * He’s 93 years old.
    * No head coaching experience.
    A great coordinator does not make a great head coach, as we’ve seen over and over again in these parts.
    Chow is one awesome OC, though. I think that Chuck’s biggest problem was finding a replacement for Chow. He never was able to get that spot secure.

    Chow would be a great hire … though much has been mentioned that he is a West Coast guy and with the ASU position open he would opt for that over State. Cowher was supposed to touch on the State coaching job today at his Press Conference and didn’t address it. I REALLY think he’s thinking about it. In listening to Logan on the radio he says he loves his NFL Europe gig and wouldn’t go for the State job — bummer.
    I wish I knew more about Johnson at Navy but I just can’t get excited over that hire. Even though he would probably be a fantastic coach. Anything is better than Amato. Some of the coaching decisions he made were beyond awful.

    I think we have a better chance at Chow then most think. I do see your point, though that going from OC to head coach has not been a popular transition.

    We could definitely land Chow… if the ASU job wasn’t open. The reason he left NCSU in the first place was because his family is West Coast and he just didn’t like the distance. He does want his shot at HC (Stanford should have been his) and ASU is pretty much exactly what he is looking for.
    Paul Johnson s an offense oriented coach. He’s a coach that could probably keep us at 8-9 wins consistently but I don’t think he can push us over the top. I would not be upset with his hiring at all but I would be blown away with excitement either.
    There are reports that Mike Sherman (former Packers HC) and David Cutcliffe (Tenn OC and former Ole Miss HC) have drectly expressed an interest in the job opening.

    They should aim high, but not as high as Butch Davis. I hear with Mr. Davis, it is his way or the highway and he likes to take charge and I not sure how Broddeur and the admin over there are going to like that. Might even get on Roy’s empire. Maybe he has learned a lesson while watching football on TV on Sat/Sun lately but old habits don’t die.
    State would be lucky to get someone like Logan but they won’t. I just hope it does not end up like the BB search.

    Anybody know if Amato wore his stupid sunglasses to the press conference where he got canned??

    No, he didn’t. But he did profess his love for all that is NC State, he loves NC State as much as anyone else.
    And we thank him for all that he has done for us.
