WRDU Goes Country

Does anyone remember that time in, what was it, 1984 when WQDR, the established rock station in the Triangle went country? Well it’s deja vu for us all as QDR’s replacement in the market back then, WRDU, has now itself gone to a country format. Remember these words from our August 29, 2005 entry?

I wouldn’t be too surprised to see ClearChannel do some
format-jostling soon. My bet is that they change the #15 station, WRVA
100.7, from Adult Alternative to Country.

Well, we were wrong there. It looks like they made their change through WRDU. (WRVA now takes the classic rock format from WRDU). It looks like a great time for Microsoft to be launching the Zune player.

TOM, good points and that does make a lot of sense! I have SIRIUS and I am happy!
Do you think this area has taken hit since XM/SIRIUS are growing?

” Everybody’s too nervous about $$$ to really take a chance and innovate. ”
I guess that could go 50/50 in a way! For me and others I know who purchased SIRIUS mainly because of the boring set list 96Rock was doing! Old boring rock! Nothing wrong w/ it but it’s get’s old quick! I would think playing more new stuff would attract new listeners! But what the heck do I know, LOL!

    tom and gpm,
guys you do make very good points, and i’m glad to see that the debate continues. unlike my past post which were to long, i’ll keep this short. checking news references to clearchannel, i see that it is in the midst of a buy-out by some investment groups, who probably know and care less about the radio/music industry. however, in that same news piece, it was stated that cc will sell-off 448 stations in 90(?) markets. i don’t know if raleigh, rdu, etc. are on the “short list”, at this time. it is something to keep in mind, though. maybe new ownership would help. who knows? also, when i return to nc, i will be ‘checking-out’ 99x (greenville?) and 105 (jacksonville). cheers, all the best, and hope the weather isn’t to bad for ya.

From what I can tell Raleigh is not one of those markets. What I read is that the family that founded Clear Channel is taking it back to being a private company. If I am wrong please correct me. Hopefully someone will have a new rock station one day in this area, but obviously it will not be 96rock, they are nothing more than a classic rock station anymore. Guess Curtis Media is showing everyone they are just like the big bad corporate giant.

WAYNE! When u head east from Raleigh to the coast, do check out Rock 105! For regular FM radio, they do a good job of mixing it up with heavy new rock mixed with some of the classic rock giants! Hearing Slipknott to Led Zepp is pretty darn cool! Or Mudvayne to Van Halen!
SDG1970, not sure about the clear channel situation but I am pretty sure this area will land another rock station to refresh this area!

It’s too bad Snakenet Metal Radio isn’t on FM! Or if I could just get Internet access in my car, so I could stream audio in my car…
Satellite radio is great, but if mobile broadband that can switch towers seamlessly ever becomes widely available at a reasonable price, then FM radio is absolutely dead. If I could listen to Snakenet and Hard Rockin’ 80′s in my car, I would never, ever, ever need an FM station for anything.

    gpm,
thanx man for the reply and when i go towards jacksonville next, i’ll check-it-out. however, my company 1st has to get my blanky-tee-blank back to the states. and if i fly into raleigh, i’ll be headed northeast towards elizabeth city. and if i fly into richmond, i guess i’ll have to do without like you guys are, as i remember richmond’s radio market being somewhat “tired” as well. we’ll see. all i know is that my obscure deep purple, twisted sister, faith no more, foo fighters, and yes, my southern rock, etc., etc., etc., will get a thorough playing through for the first time in 3 1/2 months. cheers to all, and stay warm! wayne

Ever since WRDU went country I have added my two cents worth and monitored thoughts of everyone who have lamented on the loss of Rock on commercial radio particularly in the Triangle Area. It does appear we hare vastly approaching (or are already there) an era where personal choice will dictate what we listen to versus the completely misdirected program directors working for the mindless conglomerates who own the airwaves. I am thankfull technology will allow me to load up my own radio station on a MP Player.
Even with my own 7500-20,000 songs of new rock with the hidden gems from all the classic rock albums I am sure even then someone forced to listen to my playlist would find fault with my choices no matter how great I might think they are. I miss the days of great Am & Fm Rock radio. Sadly I think they are gone.

glenn c hit the nail right on the head! those days of old, are now probably just that. and everybody’s taste are so vast and different these days, that it would be hard to please any half-dozen people completely, as opposed to numbers in the thousands. as i stated once before, thank goodness for our personal libraries, and the different forms of mass media available to us all. since i returned to the states, i’ve played almost every format i own. so now when i play my LP RECORDS, when the needle hits the vinyl, the record screams: “geez, not again, wayne!?!” cheers!

Likewise, Dope is there night before on March 7th at Hooligan’s in Jacksonville and March 8th at Jester’s in Fayetteville. Rock 105 is offering a special with eTix that will allow you to purchase a ticket to both Killswitch Engage and Dope for $35.
However, another Lincoln Theatre update; The same local production company that is bringing Black Label Society on March 20th to the Lincoln Theatre, announced last week that Lacuna Coil will also be coming to the Lincoln Theatre on April 11th.

Ive noticed a lot of people really like their satellite radios but it appears that forum is in trouble. The only 2 companies merged with each other, the only reason for doing that is because neither one is standing on their own. Id be interested to hear everyone elses opinions on this…..

Have not looked into this enough yet to really get a good grasp on the pro’s and con’s of the merge! regardless, I will still stick to my SAT radio ” Sirius “! If anything, I like the idea of merging the two..I imagine the programming will be better, since both XM and SIRIUS offer good programing, like XM having college football and I am sure this will continue w/ the merge..
If SAT Radio fails one day, then I will buy an Ipod for the car since FM radio blows..

Hi Sdg. I listened to Sirius for a year but it faded in certain areas and i soon got tired of the playlists. A lot of the different channels repeated the same songs reminiscent of FM. It finally came down to minimizing what I call the pesky small nickel and dime monthly bills that were easily to eliminate and barely miss. Thank god for my IPOD!

Glenn C, I do agree to a sense w/ the setlist! My favorite station is SIRIUS OCTANE 20, hard new rock…In a way they do play some of the new tracks a lot but what I do like about OCTANE is there playing of deep tracks from established artists..Hearing older tracks from System of A Down, Disturbed, Godsmack, Mudvaye or Sevendust…They do spin the brand new tracks a lot but I guess they have to promote new bands, who knows..
I might get a IPOD soon, I have a ton of CD’s and it would be nice to put them on one of those suckers..

Yeah GPM .. Maybe i was a little too hard on Srius. It was a whole lot more refreshing than regular radio for me . Octane was my favorite and I also enjoyed the occasional buried oldie in the Vault that no commercial station these days would ever play. Good Point!

I had XM for about 2 years and it just wasn’t worth paying for it seemed like they were playing a reel and heard a lot of the same stuff over and over. Much like what I get for free now. Who knows maybe one day radio in Raleigh will be better or should I say aimed at my musical tastes…..

I don’t mind the monthly fee at all, it’s .43 cents a day basically! I have 20+ minute commute to work each day and when I arrive at work I will stream SIRIUS online all day, so I am getting my moneys worth..W/ the merge, now if it happens, I will really enjoy The Big Ten channel for sports, turn the TV volume down and listen to Penn State football games..
GLENC, the vault is another good station, your right! They played 2112 by Rush earlier today and the whole 18 minutes of it! Huge Rush fan and I’ve heard Cirumstances, Necromancer on the vault also..
SDG1970, I hear ya man! I was hoping Raleigh would have gotten a hard edged modern rock station that played a lot of new rock and some old rock together..I did turn on 96Rock the other day and there still spinning COLD by Crossfade and they have had 3 radio hits after that release! 96 needs to catch up w/ the times! Rob Zombie has new material but they still spin his old stuff..

Not wanting to let this rest ever! Wouldn’t it be cool if Raleigh Got 2 new rock stations or Clear Channel Converted 2 of their dogs.. The River maybe? One of these newly created or converted stations would play new songs as well as some older lesser played songs by the more established artists For Example: The Scorpions had a great album that came out in 2004 (Unbreakable) Instead of wearing out Rock You Like A Hurricane It could play Through my Eyes or Love Em or Leave em from Unbreakable. I could mention many more examples but you get the idea
Now to the second station. Same principle but appeal to the younger set and i am gonna cut and paste from earlier posts to include some of the artists mentioned Exodus, Overkill, mixed in with some D.R.I., Suicidal Tendencies, with a dash of Dimmu Borgir, Borknagar, Cradle of Filth, and some occassional Mushroomhead, and Slipknot, with some Iced Earth, Demons & Wizards, Blind Guardian and SymphonyX thrown in.But throwing in a track from Mudvayne, Black Stone Cherry, Breaking Benjamin or Black Label Soceity would be GREAT alsoSure, I wish they’d play heavier stuff: I want a radio station that plays Dimmu Borgir, Slayer, Testament, Slipknot, Exodus, Children of Bodom, Still Remains, etc
If we had both of these station we would quit whining and thank our lucky stars!

Glen C I hear ya man w/ the music choices! I do think Raleigh will get another ROCK station one day geared towards the playing of hard new rock mixed with some of the established acts! The ONE boring station this town has already will need some competition! Iced Earth/Symphony X do rock, I just bought a 30GB I-POD and I put all my Iced Earth, Symphony X, Dream Theater on there…An FM station that plays Mudvayne, then Rush, then STP, then a new track from Breaking Benjamin, then Evans Blue and then a Zepplin song would be pretty cool…

Good choice on the I-Pod GPM . Takes a while to fill a 30 GIG up doesnt it? I want an 80 GIG. We can long for that Perfect station but while we do we can listen to our own choices. Now we just have to upgrade our car stereo to get an input jack to play the IPOD in our car!
