WRDU Goes Country

Does anyone remember that time in, what was it, 1984 when WQDR, the established rock station in the Triangle went country? Well it’s deja vu for us all as QDR’s replacement in the market back then, WRDU, has now itself gone to a country format. Remember these words from our August 29, 2005 entry?

I wouldn’t be too surprised to see ClearChannel do some
format-jostling soon. My bet is that they change the #15 station, WRVA
100.7, from Adult Alternative to Country.

Well, we were wrong there. It looks like they made their change through WRDU. (WRVA now takes the classic rock format from WRDU). It looks like a great time for Microsoft to be launching the Zune player.

I think that WRDU’s problem is that they never seemed to change up thier play list. For awhile that when ever I turned them on they were playing yet another song by Pink Floyd. I like Pink Floyd, but I also like variety in my life.
I agree with the many comments that Raleigh does not need yet another country station. But what can you do when a non-local company makes preconved notions about what southerners like. “Oh, we are in the south. They must like county music.”
The River was a good station that played a variety of music and now I am very sad that they changed to classic rock. I guess I will stick to my NPR, 88.1 and my CD player.

I really miss Bob and Tom in the mornings! They could be over the top, but always had great guests, and actually let them talk. What a concept. I do enjoy country, but the ‘Rooster’? Give me a break!! It WAS nice to have some choices.

  • An imperfect circle

Raleigh radio has now come full circle. Before the coming of 96.1 we had 106.1 trying to please everyone with 70s and 80s rock and very occasional modern rock that had been on the charts long enough to be safe to play (ala 96.1 now). At that time 93.3 was the adult rock station (ala 100.7 now). 96.1 came on the scene to deliver modern rock with risky cutting edge songs that were previously unheard in the Raleigh market. 88.1 has a great opportunity to be the relief for those who love and miss new/modern rock, but 88.1 is and has always been overly artsy and self important college rock that is completely happy to be unlistenable to almost anyone except people that listen to bad indie music so that they can feel cooler than everyone else. I’m guessing a new small station will pop up in 3-10 years that plays edgy modern rock, 100.7 will be replaced by 96.1 and the new station will be bought out and slowly drift into playing the safest music possible. Until then I would love to be able to listen to bob and tom in some way other than over the static/jb&b; on 106.5.

Ok, let me get this straight.
You’re all pining over the loss of RDU, a washed up jurassic rock station that was ruined by Clear Channel years ago by playing “Sweet Home Alabama” every hour.
You long for the days of Bob and Tom, a has-been syndicated show out of Indianapolis.
Meanwhile, you bash the only LOCAL station willing to take chances – a station that just the other day played “2 Minutes To Midnight” by Iron Maiden, “Been Caught Stealing” by Jane’s Addiction, “The Pot” by Tool, and “Jesus of Suburbia” by Green Day (a 9-minute song no radio station plays). That was just one afternoon.
96rock at least has a local morning show (that yes, plays music), raises money for lots of local charities, and puts on a very cool acoustic show on Sunday mornings.
But all you “cool local types” would rather have sattelite radio, a big corporate jukebox that you could duplicate on your ipod.
Congratulations. Want to know why radio is suffering? Look in the mirror.

LOL! I agree with the majority of folks with local radio! 96 Rock is stuck on playing old tunes and will play a new tune once in every 15/20 songs! I personally got tired of hearing the same classic bands! I just never understood why they don’t include more new rock along with the old stuff! Is it b/c there trying to old on to the older demograhics since terrestrial radio is on the decline? I agree with the above, 105.5 in Jacksonville is the best FM radio station in this state! When I go EAST, I will listen to that station!
The poster above me mentioned the set list of 96 ROCK! Replace the Janes Addiction with a BLACK LABEL SOCIETY SONG and replace the Green Day song with a song from Avenge Sevenfold!
I have SIRIUS radio and I love it! Man, it just went from Pantera to Hatebreed to Full Blown Chaos! Everybody I know has made the switch! who could blame em! only 10/12 bucks a month, less annoying commericals, and more selections of music and talk radio!

See, that’s exactly my point. You think a couple of those songs should be replaced and it would be perfect. Someone else will think a deeper Zeppelin track would be the right call.
BTW, I’m not disagreeing that there’s a lack of new rock on the radio. But if you are the only station playing AC/DC, Van Halen, Ozzy, Sabbath, etc. (like 96rock is) – then you have to play that stuff in decent doses. And as much as you want newer stuff, don’t forget about all the now disenfranchised RDU listeners that want classic rock. You think the River’s playing it (Fleetwood Mac-James Taylor-The Animals)?
    The grass always looks greener…

Good points man! Hey, when I tune into 96 rock at times the deep tracks are great I thought, heck I heard 2112 overture by RUSH and was impressed! But throwing in a track from Mudvayne, Black Stone Cherry, Breaking Benjamin or Black Label Soceity would be GREAT also but thats impossiable on 96Rock unless it’s the foo fighters, green day or audioslave and a song from TOOL here and there or now Iron Maiden’s new tracks!
As much as 96 Rock plays OZZY, I don’t understand why they don’t play Black Label Society since Zack plays for OZZY also! Same sound, and a great heavy basic rock band!
I will tune into 96.1 Fm here and there but’s it’s not my cup of tea!

And thats the reason why I got SIRIUS! To hear new music and good ole heavy metal! This area has no source of that, only one rock station that plays the heck out of the 90′s, 80′s and 70′s!
I travel a lot for work and I really think the Pittsburgh area has the best market for FM radio, 2 classic rock stations along with a modern alternative station and another station like 96 Rock called 93.7 K rock and they have the same motto as 96 ” e-thing that rocks ” but the differnce is K rock plays a good dose of new rock along with the classics!
OK, I am done with this, LOL!

96 Rock may still suck, but they’re still a darn sight better than they were, and they’re still the best station in the Triangle. Sure, I wish they’d play heavier stuff: I want a radio station that plays Dimmu Borgir, Slayer, Testament, Slipknot, Exodus, Children of Bodom, Still Remains, etc.
But since we don’t have that, I for one am willing to be happy that we now have something we didn’t have a year ago: a station that plays Motley Crue, Tool, Green Day, Iron Maiden, Twisted Sister, Godsmack, Danzig and 3 Doors Down all glommed together.

Compared to how bad FM radio in this area has traditionally been, I’m f’in THRILLED to have a station that will play new Iron Maiden. By comparison to what we’re used to around here, having that is about like having freaking KNAC! :-)

I’ve lived in the 106.1 listening area for about 18 years now and have never liked the station. They were on my presets, but I never listened to them.
I’m really saddened by what has happened to 96.1 lately. I used to like the station and listened to amost nothing else. The recent “everything that rocks” format is complete crap. I’m already burnt out on this 80′s heavy hair rock they’ve latched onto. Obviously some people like it, but I didn’t like it when it was current and like it even less now.
What annoys me the most about them is the slogan. If they were “everything that rocks” I wouldn’t keep hearing the same song multiple times per day, day after day.
I would love to have a real modern rock station back… (or for the first time).

The last two posters nailed it with the only rock station in this area, 96 ROCK! There moto ” everything that rocks ” is totally B.S, LOL! I have SIRIUS but every now and then in the old lady’s car, I have to listen to FM radio! Like this weekend but were getting SIRIUS in her car soon!
The heavy doses of classic rock mixed with the 80′s and 90′s get’s old quick! Nothing new, same songs we all been hearing for the past 20 yrs! I don’t think I have ever heard em play back to back songs from this decade! Play Led Zepp, then go into a overplayed Nirvana song, then play van halen, then annoying commericals, then play an overplayed pearl jam song, then we hear the annoying voice guy ” eveything that rocks ” then play a classic rock song or two and then commericals and then come back and play another overplayed 90′s song and back into the 70′s and just maybe a song from 2000 and thats usually b/w green day, nickelback or audioslave!
I have SIRIUS but this area needs another rock station bad! I always say this, but that station in Jacksonville, NC 105.5 Carolinas Pure Rock is the best FM station I have ever heard! I wish we could pick em up in Raleigh!
