WRDU Goes Country

Does anyone remember that time in, what was it, 1984 when WQDR, the established rock station in the Triangle went country? Well it’s deja vu for us all as QDR’s replacement in the market back then, WRDU, has now itself gone to a country format. Remember these words from our August 29, 2005 entry?

I wouldn’t be too surprised to see ClearChannel do some
format-jostling soon. My bet is that they change the #15 station, WRVA
100.7, from Adult Alternative to Country.

Well, we were wrong there. It looks like they made their change through WRDU. (WRVA now takes the classic rock format from WRDU). It looks like a great time for Microsoft to be launching the Zune player.

Where did “The Blade” go…I’m an old rocker and can’t tell you how much I miss RDU and The Blade. I’ve lived in NY, CT and FL and have never been without a great rock station…but of course, NC continues to be a first in many things in my life…the first place without decent rock!

For all the Bob and Tom fans out there, you can sign up for a VIP membership for an average of $5 bucks a month ($29.95 for a six month membership) and download the whole show via podcast. That’s what I’m planning to do going forward, and boycott the radio stations in Raleigh altogether.

Wow, this sucks. Good thing I have a car that has mp3 capability.
If you can try 92.3 out of greensboro. Excellent AM show and good solid rock the rest of the time. 96′s new format is pretty cool Sabbath to Korn to Nirvana to Bush. I agree with everyone else. I’ve lived all over, including smaller markets, and never heard crappier radio. Satelitte will kick all their asses eventually.

Let’s all bow our heads and pray that Bob and Tom, or at least the Best of Bob and Tom jump to XM Radio ala Opie and Anthony…I wanna hear Chick yelling Goooooood Morninnnnnnnnnnnnnnng, not Dumb and Dumber, whose annoying voice has you yearning for rush hour road rage as an escape.
Bob and Tom on RDU was the only local radio I listened to…guess now, like the others full time XM and Mp3′s.

there are no decent stations left in the area. i was enjoying 100.7 and you could leave it on for hours. HOWEVER, has anyone noticed a recent change in signal strength that seems to coincide with recent format changes? from one day to the next 100.7 and 102.9 are much worse, and i have to have 102.9 to hear Hurricanes Hockey. Anyone?

Just amazed that RDU would go country!?
RDU was formed out of the shock that WQDR was going country. They took an old Wilson NC station and transformed it into this new, hot rock station. It was “our” station…formed out of the revolt from QDRs transgression. We were proud to sport RDU stickers on our cars.
I moved away from Raleigh for 10 years, and when I returned, was very dissapointed to hear the same tired music on RDU that they played when I left. I stopped listening, but I didnt stop caring. RDU has pulled a ‘QDR’, now I no longer care.
I will just listen to my iPod now. Hey advertisers, here that? Forget radio in Raleigh, no one is listening.

Another country station, are you kidding??? I like country but we need some good ol’ fashion rock n’ roll too! Very disappointed.

Raleigh radio has gone downhill, particularly in the past four years but was never anything to write home about before. The stations sound horrible and the DJs sound like wayward kids. I feel bad for advertisers – because they are the ones paying big city dollars for this crap.
Thank God for CD’s! Even the best “HD” sound can’t fix the poor programming now offered in Raleigh.

Rock 105.5 is the best overall rock station I have ever heard for FM radio! Everything from Slipknot to Van Halen, Mudvayne to Rush and a ton of hard edged new rock mixed with classic’s!
96 Rock plays NO new rock! The old tunes are great but it’s good to be refreshed with new rock!

The last two posts have made a good point. Rock 105 in Jacksonville and WXNR 99X Out of Greenville are the best two stations in Eastern N.C. Problem is you cannot pick up either station until you get close to Goldsboro. 96.1 sounds too much like what RDU was a few years ago. Good Move 96.1 we really need to hear wore out songs we have heard a million times.

I agree, around Goldsboro is when you start picking both stations up! 96 Rock simply stinks! worn out songs from the 70, 80 and 90′s! nothing new, nothing fresh! I would trade Rock 105 with 96 Rock anyday! Really is a shame that this area is bad with FM radio, 3 country stations and 2 classic rock!

LOL… Yeah, my radio WAS set on WRDU. I pulled it up hoping to hear some old rock to hear a VERY country song! I thought it was a joke so I waited it out – no joke folks, I can hardly believe it! What the Hell?? The Rooster?? LOL. Sorry, but you’ve lost another one!… I’ll tune to 107.9 first!

Don’t I know you from somewhere? :-)
Anyway, 96 Rock isn’t terribly good, but they are: a. not as bad as you think (they were playing the new Tool yesterday, for example) and b. the best choice in the Triangle right now.
What any town of Raleighs size needs is a rock n roll station that has a a program director who knows that what most people want to hear are mainly new songs from new artists as well as new songs with the established artists.
Yeah, that’s pretty much it. Give us a mix of the new songs by both old AND new artists, with the older songs mixed in. That’s the one thing about 96 Rock that annoys me now: they play NEW songs by NEW artists and OLD songs by OLD artists, almost exclusively. You never hear the NEW songs by the OLD artists.
I mean, everytime you hear a band that came to prominence in the 80′s (Motley Crue, Poison, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, etc.) it’s always a song from the 80′s. Now, God knows I like music from the 80′s, but how about playing the new material by these bands? Quit pretending like they fell off the face of the planet in 1992.

Bottom Line….
1. Ad money is falling in all segments of broadcast radio Except Country and Talk.
2. Rock listeners are turning to iPod and sats for music and away from regular radio. rock cd’s are toast, too.
3. Immigrants from south of US listen to US country music…not rock.
4. Broadcast radio demographics are too old (over 30) for advertisers to
provide consistent revenue (same as newspapers).
5. finally, who do you know that still uses a regular TV antenna to receive
a signal? i know no one who does. this is radio’s future as well.

I moved to NC from NY in the end of 2004, WRDU was one of the best Classic rock stations I have heard in along time. I am the daughter of an NBC anchorman, and have been exposed to the TV and Radio inner-workings all of my life. My father had been a DJ many years prior.
The morning I woke up and heard “the rooster”…honestly, I doubt North carloina needs ANOTHER country music station. Dont get me wrong, I love country and it is what I listen to most of the time. But the rooster crow every five seconds was annoying enough to make me decide to never again listen to that station.
I was also a BOB and Tom fan, as were a very large number of listeners, perhaps thats why they are one of the NUMBER ONE shows in the NATION. But what does a nation know,,,,silly us, a board of directors sitting there counting numbers on paper in reference to commercials sold knows who is listening better than the general public, right?!?!?!
