WRDU Goes Country

Does anyone remember that time in, what was it, 1984 when WQDR, the established rock station in the Triangle went country? Well it’s deja vu for us all as QDR’s replacement in the market back then, WRDU, has now itself gone to a country format. Remember these words from our August 29, 2005 entry?

I wouldn’t be too surprised to see ClearChannel do some
format-jostling soon. My bet is that they change the #15 station, WRVA
100.7, from Adult Alternative to Country.

Well, we were wrong there. It looks like they made their change through WRDU. (WRVA now takes the classic rock format from WRDU). It looks like a great time for Microsoft to be launching the Zune player.

I like country but we have enough stations already. I quit QDR years ago; 99.9 is good, but I don’t listen in the a.m. Bob and Tom is what I want to hear. And they changed the FOXY afternoon line-up with an equally lousy replacement. Who’s running Clear Channel now…a bunch of roosters?

Clear Channel strikes again! Congratulations to the managers and consultants who run the local Clear Channel stations. You have successfully pissed off not one, but TWO sets of listeners. These geniuses do not care about what we, the listeners, think. They only thing they care about how much revenue is generated to keep Clear Channel’s owners and stockholders happy. The best way to respond is to contact their advertisers and let them know that you will boycott them as long as they support these radio stations, then do what you say. Our best hope now is that the wonderful Bob and Tom morning show will reappear on another signal in the Raleigh-Durham market. Curtis Media are you listening?

I was pissed off years ago when my rock station WQDR went country. RDU replaced them, and now I am betrayed again. Like we really need another country station. Many thanks to the neckties that slid this in with no notice. I refuse to listen to country and will not reward Clear Channel by listening to 100.7. Why did they have to screw both sets of listeners. I would assume that the change will be to a “canned” format with no local DJ’s.
Where is Bob and Tom. I’ll be at the show in Raleigh in a couple of weeks. That should be interesting.

What any town of Raleighs size needs is a rock n roll station that has a a program director who knows that what most people want to hear are mainly new songs from new artists as well as new songs with the established artists. An occasional classic ( but not always the most popular)song mixed in for good measure.Along with some syndicated programs like Dee Sniders House of Hair for example. This included with ability for the listener to interract with the station (requests are alway appreciated) makes for the base of any great station. I have tried to tell 96.1 this and now they sound more like the OLD RDU. I had given up on RDU years ago. Any body need a program director with some musical foresight send me an e mail . I got a good day job so I wont come cheap. The reward for the station would be huge.

So if I understand these so called loyal listers of RDU….because the position on the dial changed you will not listen to then…do you have an old radio that the dial wont move ?
I totally agree this market needs a really good rock station. Maybe one day it will happen but from my understanding the 99.1 station is awful, has no reception and QDR just plays the same thing over and over o for the country music fans I’m guessing this will be a homerun and will probably end Curtis Medias stronghold on this genre as well as this market. I know as a small business owner the advertising rates on QDR are not feasable so I look forward to the competition
As for Bob & Tom im sure they will land on another station in the market if there is a demand for them.
Hpefully it wont be on Curtis Media, they always seem to try an play the locally owned and operated and that just gets old especially when being in a digital age they cant even offer their listeners streaming audio. Maybe Don Curtis could forgo the new Yacht or extra Mercedes or whatever else he spends his millions and reward local listeners like Clear Channel does.

WHYYYYYY isnt there a JACK FM here in raleigh?? i just moved here from nyc and there are SO many cities and towns that have their own Jack station. The variety on those stations is just incredible, constantly surprising the listener with what they decide to play next. You really just never know what you’ll get! There’s no genre…it’s truly them playing what they want. Perfect for anyone with any variation in taste at all (which is most people!).
PLEAAAASE come to raleigh JACK FM!

The cock of the walk behind these changes at clear channel is a guy named, ummm… this isn’t a joke, Dick. Now the rooster makes sense! Ok, not really.
Supposedly you can still get your classic rock and roll only now it’s on 100.7. Apparently 100.7 will now be WRDU (???). The “powers that be” decided to relocate dial locations because 100.7 has the stronger signal, but probably to piss off Curtis/96 as well for usurping RDU’s format. Confusing? No doubt. Just be glad you’re not a sponsor with paid advertising on a station that no longer markets to your demographic! Yeeouch.
No idea about plans for B & T but Jack FM sounds like the ticket Raleigh radio needs. There was a great station I picked up while visiting Corolla a few years back. I think it was actually broadcast out of Virginia Beach or Norfolk, called The Coast. Awesome mix of everything (Bob Marley, Nine Inch Nails, DMB, Cure, U2, Jack Johnson, Nirvana, Weezer) but apparently also unprofitable, because they no longer exist. =(

Both satellite radio services have several separate rock channels for each decade 60′s -> now. If you’re concerned enough about the music you’re hearing to be posting comments here, I can’t understand why you still care about local stations.

I guess the suits being from out of town figured Raleigh = South = Redneck = Country.
I am surprised they did not go for some the folk whine that passes for rock theses days, or some nursery rap to appeal to the kiddies.
I guess it could have been worse, hell maybe we got off easy with a country format. :(
Rock is Dead in Raleigh and Clear Channel killed it.

I thought I had set my radio to the wrong station. Finding out WRDU went to country (not another one) was a real disappointment. What will I absolutely miss the most? The best morning show I have ever heard … The Bob and Tom Show. What a great way to start the day.

88.1, worst college radio station ever. No real college radio station has commercials. I wish 88.1 would give up and donate their money to the Duke and UNC stations so that we could hear them in Raleigh.

If you read the N&O; article, you can understand the decision.
QDR is the #1 station in the market with a huge market share.
RDU or any other “classic rock” station doesn’t exactly attract new listeners. All it can do is lose marketshare. And obviously has been struggling.
So if you are a Clear Channel suit, why not dump an underperforming station and aim to take marketshare from #1?
Seems like a clear business decision. Now if they would re-program the “new” RDU on 100.7 with something from this decade, it would be a great improvement.

I have been a long time listner of RDU, I listend to John Boy and Billy a few years back, it was funny for a while. I tuned into to Rooster this morning, listened J.B. and Billy, what I heard was the same old routines I heard several years back, with that said I miss B&T. Yes RDU’s programing is not what it was years ago, but come on country? I want Bob and Tom. Did not J.B. and Billy get cancelled from several area stations including Curtis Media? I agree we need a alternative progessive rock station. I hope Clear Channel will respond with an alternative programing. Thankful for my XM and IPOD where I can choose my own preferences. Triangle radio programing is a huge dissapointment

My morning always started with Bob and Tom on RDU and the drive home with The Blade or Cy Young on Foxy 104.3. Well last Friday afternoon, no Friday 5:00 “wanna beat on my drum all day!” Country? I thought my radio was off dial! Another country radio station? That’s not even real country, everything sounds alike, everyone looks alike. Turned to Foxy and some male version of Rachel Ray is yelling, “is there any grown folks in the house?” Will be getting xm satelite and an IPod this weekend!

I agree WRDU’s format was pretty tired. But I listened every morning to Bob and Tom–my favorite morning show EVER! A huge disappointment that they’re gone. I always thought, though, that B&T; wasn’t a good match for WRDU’s programming–a more progressive station would have been a better fit. I sincerely hope another local station will pick them up. It was a bright spot in this otherwise dull radio town.

Ugh, morning radio talk shows. How boring. What is wrong with just playing music in the morning? Is there some rule that says music is only for afternoon or something?
I’m glad 96.1 mostly ditched the morning talk show thing when they changed formats. It’s nice to actually hear songs on the radio while driving to work in the morning.
