WRDU Goes Country

Does anyone remember that time in, what was it, 1984 when WQDR, the established rock station in the Triangle went country? Well it’s deja vu for us all as QDR’s replacement in the market back then, WRDU, has now itself gone to a country format. Remember these words from our August 29, 2005 entry?

I wouldn’t be too surprised to see ClearChannel do some
format-jostling soon. My bet is that they change the #15 station, WRVA
100.7, from Adult Alternative to Country.

Well, we were wrong there. It looks like they made their change through WRDU. (WRVA now takes the classic rock format from WRDU). It looks like a great time for Microsoft to be launching the Zune player.

So we now have Curtis, Clear Channel AND Capitol Broadcasting all with Country stations now!
3 Country, 2 Classic Rock and No modern rock.
    Great.

I’m with Chris, why can’t Raleigh have a modern rock station? Why?!
How can the triangle be one of the best places to live when it has the worst radio stations EVAR! The stations are always changing (morning shows in particular) and just basically clones of each other? Why can’t we have good talk radio like WJFK – with Don and Mike, G. Gordon Liddy?
I HATE Raleigh radio. If I want a real radio station I listen to WNRN via the internet. I think a public programming option is our only alternative to get some real music into this town.

    C’mon, “The Rooster”??????

Well, maybe if WRDU had bought more than Zeppelin 4 and AC/DC’s Greatest Hits for their catalog, they may have attracted a larger listening audience. Overall, Raleigh radio is without a doubt the worst radio market to which I have ever been exposed.

Raleigh has enough country stations. We need a Rock station that plays Rock and Roll from the 70′s, 80′s and today without listening to all the older songs before playing anything new. This area has the worst radio stations I have ever listened too. I’m going to have to look into buying sirus or xm radio. One good thing about all of this I don’t have to listen to Bob the blade anymore. I can listen to music on the way home till I buy a sirus or xm.

Triangle radio is awful. When I moved here from Atlanta, radio was one of the things that disappointed me the most. I liked the river format on WRVA. Before that, I listened to WNND (the original format) and the old WCAS (104.3 before the Foxy simulcast).
I, too, was sad to see G Gordon Liddy leave the air here.

Ugh. 106.1 RDU wasn’t a particularly good rock station, but at least it was rock. What moron thought the Triangle needed more f’in country?!??
In fairness to 96.1, they’re not really a “classic rock” station. They’re doing a pretty good job of mixing up the classic stuff and newer stuff. When you can hear Motley Crue and Linkin Park in the same set, that’s decent variety… well, decent for commercial FM radio. But despite their “everything that rocks” slogan, they definitely do NOT play *everything* that rocks.
What we need is a real serious rock station that plays nothing but straight-up ass-kicking rock. Somebody give me a radio station where I can hear old Alice Cooper, KISS and Deep Purple alongside Ratt, Dokken and Motley Crue, alongside Metallica, Exodus, Overkill, mixed in with some D.R.I., Suicidal Tendencies, with a dash of Dimmu Borgir, Borknagar, Cradle of Filth, and some occassional Mushroomhead, and Slipknot, with some Iced Earth, Demons & Wizards, Blind Guardian and SymphonyX thrown in.
Oh, wait, this is North Carolina… not gonna happen. :-(

I would not be surprised if this is a stunt, similar to what 100.7 did as “the Bull” back when they switched from oldies to adult alternative. Anything to get press and throw Curtis & Capital on their heels.
Clear Channel has a station 106 the Rooster out of Columbus, GA. Simple to bring the bumpers, sweepers and branding. I still think Clear Channel would do better with a format similar to what they have in Austin’s “the river”. Kinda an christian rock, alternative, “positive music”.
The best thing about it, no matter your religious preference, it is different than anything else in the market. Variety on the dial. Not the same 10 songs played on 4 stations.

I posted this on the other thread, but because of the feces that passes for music on the local airwaves, I’ve been turned onto SportsTalk lately…there are 2 stations I listen to now pretty regularly in the market, and there’s no stupid morning-zoo crap or the same 5 songs in a playlist. It’s probably not for everyone, but it is refreshing.

Radio in Raleigh is a horrendous mess. I liked 96.1 when it first aired around 1998, but lately it has become a “lets try and please everyone station”. Apprently, it was actually trying to hammer the final nail in 106.1′s coffin instead of trying to please everybody. Now, no one knows what radio station to listen to with all the format changes. I guess I will give up on music and listen to NPR all the time on 91.5 instead.

Well at least we still have WKNC 88.1. Good station overall. I really thought 96.1 was headed in a good direction and now – not so much. This is just not a good radio town right now. Hope to see that change. I have worked in radio off and on since 1987 and I swear I will never make a career of radio because it’s just so fickle.
Yeah I remember the day that WRDU went from country to classic rock in 1984. I was in high school. First song – “I know it’s only rock and roll but I like it…”

Maybe if WRDU had a decent signal they would have attracted more listeners. How can you claim to be a Raleigh station when all you get is static in Cary/Morrisville and you have a clear signal in Greenville?

OBTW while I’m griping about management at RDU – it would have helped if they had a decent producer in the mornings that could hit the cues for the commercial breaks. I can’t count how many times I woke up at 6am to dead air, or heard a commercial break run into the talk portion of Bob and Tom. The show has 13 minute talk portions, followed by 7 minute commercial and local news breaks. How hard is that to remember? Hopefully their new format brings a new staff that can tell time…
I’m guessing by the promos Friday with John Boy and Hill Billy that they’re coming back. Has anyone heard where B and T might land? I guess I can always become a VIP member, download the podcast and write off Raleigh radio altogether.

88.1 WKNC is on all six of my presets now. Well along with 88.9 since i rather listen to a public station beg me for money than listen to the other clones.
and then there’s Sports Talk on 1490 and 620 like JP said.
    bah raleigh. bah.

ugh. raleigh radio is a waste of perfectly good airwaves. I’ll be keeping my iPod handy, stick with local public radio, and KCRW (Santa Monica, CA) for the best new stuff out there. Nothing beats Nic Harcort’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic”. Oh, that’s a public station too. Obviously corporate=crap.

Unfriggen believable! The last thing this town needs is another country station. The idiots at Clear Channel didn’t even have the balls to tell us before they made the switch because they knew that people would flood the station with calls to keep WRDU on the air. Now they won’t even answer the phone! I’ve been saying from the beginning that this is what we get with big corporate radio. All of the complaints about bland Raleigh radio can be traced back to that. If anyone finds a station with B&T; in the morning, please let me know!

WCAS!?! Is that you out there, Chuck G.?
How funny someone remembers that station. Like some many in this market, SO much potential, so much lack of vision on the part of their management at the time. What is funny is that big companies always do a bunch of research before they do drastic things like change a station’s format. And, the consistently funny thing about this radio market is that research always comes back and says one or both of these things: not enough country and/or not enough adult comtemporary (Mix 101.5 and Sunny 93.9).
When Osborn Commnications bought 104.3 from Don Curtis way back when, they sunk a bunch of money into research and tryig to move the signal to cover Raleigh and were told to compete with 101.5 by consultants. 2 years later 104 was on satellite, a failure.
My point is, there is a market for interesting radio around here, but for some reason the research consultants can NEVER find it.

What the…? I have read most of the responses and has the radio airwaves in Raleigh gone berserk? This “new” RDU the southern rock/country is making me sick. I just moved from Greensboro and at least they had several great stations and you could get WEND out of Charlotte with Bob and Tom. This area should and could have a great alternative following if the powers that be would take their heads out of their asses and really see what their demographics want. Please oh please change for the future or at least return to the way that it was.
BTW I was on Bob and Tom this morning and currently WEND is the only station in NC that is promoting them. Bummer!

With all of these negative responses indicating how unhappy most people are about his ridiculous change, who in the heck did the powers that be think they were making happy by this change? Hopefully, their sponsors will see that there is no potential market for sales in advertising with this station and they will have to rethink their stupidity. I just want to know where I can find Bob and Tom.
