WRDU Goes Country

Does anyone remember that time in, what was it, 1984 when WQDR, the established rock station in the Triangle went country? Well it’s deja vu for us all as QDR’s replacement in the market back then, WRDU, has now itself gone to a country format. Remember these words from our August 29, 2005 entry?

I wouldn’t be too surprised to see ClearChannel do some
format-jostling soon. My bet is that they change the #15 station, WRVA
100.7, from Adult Alternative to Country.

Well, we were wrong there. It looks like they made their change through WRDU. (WRVA now takes the classic rock format from WRDU). It looks like a great time for Microsoft to be launching the Zune player.

I just got it this week, yeah it can only hold 7K songs, and it’s going to take a long time to fill that thang up LOL…Thus far I have Dream Theater, Rush, Mudvayne, Iced Earth, and Symphony X..I think eventually I will get the device for the car but I have SIRIUS in there already..

Hey, I am getting up here way late for the changes in WRDU. I grew up in Lexington, NC and was raised off of Rock 93 and WRDU. Now that I live close to the coast, the best Rock n Roll is on 105.5. It plays all the new Rock, some old. 106.5 took on Bob the Blade and it seems to have helped the station greatly with that personality! It really is a mess at home to have so little Rock!

  4. Champ

Andrea is 106.5 in Greenville? Good for the BLADE, at least he stayed in NC for his new job…I was wondering what happened to him…
Rock 105 is a darn good FM station, better then what we have here in raleigh for rock radio, in fact LIGHT years better..I steam them online here at work..

  5. ANDREA

No, 106.5 is actually in New Bern, NC. Blade is really improved this station to me. Feels like home! I agree with you on Rock 105, it is the best.

Ok, I thought it was in Greenville…I like how Rock 105 plays what’s hard and new along w/ some of the older stuff but not overplaying the older stuff…the station here in Raleigh is stuck in 1983 24/7..

  8. Larry

I agree w/ all the above, I got SIRIUS RADIO for the simple fact that ROCK radio SUCKS in Raleigh, NC big time..96Rock was the most bland, boring, outdated, boring DJ’s, nothing new and jurassic station I have ever heard…When was the last time they played something new and fresh? 100.7 was to mellow/slow…G105 is not my type…And three country stations, WTF? Oh, and the frickin commericals were annoying as hell…Thank goodness for SIRIUS and IPODS

wow! i had thought this topic was done by now. however, i’m still glad to see all of you ‘chiming-in’ with your opinions. keep up the debate. it gives me something to read while i ‘babysit’ this blimp in elizabeth city. cheers to all!

If this area wants better rock radio, another FM station is simply needed, period to compete w/ 96GeriatricRock! Having one BLAND/BORING rock station does not cut it, well for me at least! Reason I got SIRIUS is to hear rock music beyond classic rock and to hears whats new and fresh out there…Not into country, so I really can’t comment on that but 3 stations blaring the same stuff is sort of absurd..G105 was OK I guess, at least they played some new rock but mainly the pop rock…Y1029 was OK, umm-bop music is enjoyable at times..I read the reviews of Rock105 above and I agree that’s a rock station..When I go to wilmington, I crank them! Too bad we could not pick them up in the car..

I recently moved here from Cleveland, where I listened to the best radio station ever – 100.7 WMMS. It gave me Bob and Tom in the morning and a good mix of new/classic rock the rest of the day. I can’t tell you how happy I am to have stumbled across this webpage. I thought maybe I was the only one who thought the radio here SUCKS. Guess I’ll have to listen to streaming WMMS on my computer and I-pod in the car :(

  12. DDP

Yeah, Raleigh rock radio for me went down the tubes, so I stopped listening to FM radio…Like all the others who posted, I think it would have been nice if this area had a more modern rock station

Raleigh radio=YAWN…B/w SIRIUS and IPOD, no need for it anymore
