Plow and Hearth Coming to North Hills

Plow and Hearth Logo Any of you who were combing the Retail section of the classified ads in the N&O last week would have noticed that Plow & Hearth is coming to North Hills.  Fortunately, I adore my day job so I didn’t see the ad but this weekend I did notice the “Coming Soon” sign added to the space in front of Mura.  For a while now we have been wondering what would fill this interestingly shaped, but very visible space.  Personally, I had hoped for a Dean and Deluca-ish entry, but that apparently isn’t in the works at all.  So, Plow & Hearth it is.  Not exactly my cup of tea, but a nice shop nonetheless.  I think I recall buying at least a thing or two there back in my Charlottesville days.  Not sure of the opening date just yet.

    Aaargh!
    Say it ain’t so!
    Plow. Hearth. Hayseed. Raleigh.
    They all go together!
And to think we could have had a Dean and Deluca’s!
When will we ever escape the tenacious grip of rural simplicity???

I wouldn’t sweat losing Dean & Deluca at all. I have it on excellent info from a restaurant industry pro in Charlotte that the New Yorker owner of the chain called Charlotte a “hillbilly, hick town” and barely OK’ed his advisors’ pleas to franchise in that city. Apparently, his thoughts about the city didn’t change despite his two restaurants doing fantastic business in Charlotte.
Now…if he thinks Charlotte (THE largest city in NC; TWO pro sports teams; and the nation’s #2 financial center) is “hillbilly and hick” then what would he think of us?
We don’t need a Dean & Deluca to be considered a real city…and their food is overpriced and not that good. I went to both Charlotte locations with my ex-girlfriend when we dated, and I was not impressed at all and broke by the time we left. Two sandwiches (no sides) and two glasses of wine for $40?….no thanks…

The Dean and Delucas in Charlotte are a pitiful shell of the NYC store (actually there is absolutely no resemblance). I agree with other poster who said it was overpriced and the quality was lacking. The service was also horrendous-the person working the register barely spoke English, had no clue of the products, and belonged more at McDonald’s than a so-called gourmet shop. It was funny watching the pseudo-sophisticated NASCAR set of Charlotte thinking they were living the big-city lifestyle.

The fact about Dean & Deluca is that the owner lives in Kansas City. He bought the company with its NYC and Georgetown stores and opened in Kansas City (his hometown), Napa Valley (tax writeoff for wine trips), and Charlotte (hometown of his best friend – more tax writeoffs).
One of the Sr. VPs told me that the chain is focused on expanding into markets like Chicago and Miami before looking at us. Given that the entire prepared foods industry is not doing well (Southern Market in Myrtle Beach closed and even Brinker is having a hard time growing Eatzi’s), I wouldn’t put too much blame on D&D; or us for not paring up.
The sandwiches at Charlotte’s Dean & Deluca are great, but yes, it is a far cry from their full market stores in SoHo and Georgetown.

The Plow & Hearth catalog is a huge and very-well respected entity with humble rural beginnings… much like NC State and Raleigh itself. I believe their retail presence do well here.
And what is Raleigh’s fascination with trying to land overpriced, overhyped, overrated “label” stores/restaurants/etc. like Dean & Deluca? Raleigh so desperately wants to be Charlotte. I wish Raleigh could just develop an identity of its’ own

Interesting points in favor as well as against.
We are still finding our path and our identity as a city. Sometimes I think here in Raleigh we confuse “consumption of luxury goods” with “cultural sophistication.” There can be overlap between the two, but neither is a firm indicator of the other.

OR, perhaps everyone is making way too much out of my “Dean and Deluca-ish” statement. I didn’t necessarily mean Dean and Deluca, but rather a gourmet store with much better sandwiches than just about anywhere else in North Hills plus the small little items that are available in Southern Season and really not anywhere else in the Triangle. So chill out on the D&D; name, that’s not what I meant, people. I am seriously just interested in having more options. Plow and Hearth doesn’t really give me options that make me go whoopee… Which doesn’t mean that others of you won’t enjoy it. Whoopee.

Dude, Raleigh blows Charlotte away. We have all kinds of nice stores and resturaunts without your heinous traffic and packs of roaming Salvadoran gang members
