RBC Center to Get $25 Million Renovation

News14 is reporting that the Triangle Business Journal is reporting that there will be a $25 million renovation to the RBC Center over the next 7 years, just on the heels of the Carolina Hurricanes’ first profitable season. The renovation will include more office space, a new private club and restaurant, a new jumbotron, new sound system, and other amenities. More details are sure to come today.

Hmmm…as new as that building is, these changes should be called something else than a “renovation”. A renovation is something you do to an older historic building to bring it up to code.
From a more accurate angle, perhaps they should call it an “upgrade”.

How can they need to upgrade the building already? They just bought stuff like the jumbotron. If they really feel these upgrades are necessary they didnt plan well in the first place.

How’s about they use the money to move the friggin thing downtown? We’re going to see a Briar Creek like sprawl fest out there soon. :(

Remember, this thing is 8 years old. It is not brand new. A lot of wear and tear with 8 seasons of 2 teams plus concerts, the circus, etc. Plus, keep it up to date as you go along so it is not a $100M after 15 years.

I was AMAZED at the video quality of the new video pieces in Greensboro Coliseum this past March. Again on Wednesday, the video quality of the Dave Matthews Band backdrop was incredible as well.
With that in mind, I’d say improving the video quality on the jumbotron is a high priority, especially for hockey with its teeny tiny puck. The corner sides that are monochrome were a bad idea from the start. Their resolution is so poor that they really aren’t useful for graphics or text. On the other hand, the sound system needs to be upgraded? I think it is fine.
The only other improvement the building REALLY needs in order to offer a great experience is the return of Goodberry’s. Dippin’ Dots were a neat novelty at the State Fair in 1997, but they are a pitiful substitute for some good ice cream.

I have said this 1000 times. (ask my wife)
IF Dippin’ Dots are the “Ice Cream of the Future”…what does that say about our future????
