Get To The Beach Without Wilmingtoning

Fans of Myrtle Beach, Brunswick County Beaches,  and Topsail Beach won’t have to weave through Wilmington any more as Interstate 140, the north Wilmington Expressway, opened today. The freeway’s eastern end begins at U.S. 17 in Scotts Hill and extends westward to its terminus at highway 421. The exit is just beyond mile marker 417 on Interstate 40, but the signage is slightly confusing. Those going to Myrtle Beach and Brunswick Beaches exit right and those going to beaches north of Wrightsville will take a loop exit after the overpass.

This information is HIGHLY useful since I’m leaving tomorrow for Myrtle Beach. I used to go through Wilmington but began going through Castle Hayne to avoid the Wilmington traffic. The map doesn’t show the area you’re talking about using though. Can I get some more info please???

I believe it is exit 416 just past the old Castle Hayne exit. If you were going to MB you would take the first exit (I-140 West) and go as far as it would take you to US 421. US 17 is signed over this road as well so I believe if you just follow the signs for US 17 South towards Myrtle Beach you should be alright.

here’s the DOT press release. Its a great road, i’ve already been on it. Saves and enormous amount of time going south into brunswick county, plus theres a very nice high rise bridge over the cape fear river.

    Question:
Why would you go through Wilmington to get to Myrtle Beach anyway?
I can get to Cherry Grove section of Myrtle Beach in just under 3 hours.
    Is this route shorter/faster?

I-40 to U.S. 17 into South Carolina is a popular route because U.S. 17 is a four-lane divided highway from Wilmingtion into South Carolina. With the opening of this bypass, motorists no longer need go into Wilmington itself to catch 17. They can stay on a four-lane route the entire trip. Both the bypass and new superstreet construction in Leland are significantly improving the drive. Also, Cherry Grove is a separate community, not part of the town of Myrtle Beach.. Neither is North Myrtle Beach, which is also a separate town.

As one who Wilmingtons every day, I’ve already been on it a couple of times and it’s fabulous. However, I must add that anyone who before now “wove through Wilmington” to get to Topsail from Raleigh is probably too stupid to live, certainly too stupid to use a computer. The jury’s still out on whether the new highway will be better/faster than 50 or 210 to get to Topsail from points west. It comes into 17 where there can still be Cary-like congestion at rush hour, even with four lanes. And while carynative’s enlightenment about the civic makeup of Horry County municipalities is very impressive I’m pretty sure no one cares? Myrtle Beach is that big giant gob of overdevelopment just past Calabash as far as I’m concerned! But please, y’all just keep right on through here if that’s where you want to go.

Curious to see a picture of the new high-rise bridge over the Cape Fear on this road? Anyone have one – my search has turned up nada.
