Raleigh Streets (Bonus): Yarmouth

Yarmouth Drive map it #1, #2
I heard a friend recently say,"We live on Yarmouth." I replied,"Which one?" Yes, once again, I’m on Raleigh’s case for having two streets with the same name.

Just off of Glenwood Avenue near Oberlin, one can find Yarmouth Drive #1. It is the first street off of Edenburgh Rd. (which secretly becomes both Lake Boone Tr. and Cambridge within 1/4 of a mile – how is that for stupidity in a street system?) Yarmouth #1 is a quiet residential street that is half of a loop with Chesterfield Rd. The name changes from Yarmouth to Chesterfield with no warning.
Yarmouth Drive #2 is nearby and extends from Sussex Rd. to Coley Forest Place. This is another quiet neighborhood street.

Problem: While these are not major streets, it is important to clear confusion adn reduce the costs of the delivery of emergency services, mail, and food.

Solution:
Rename Yarmouth #1 to "Chesterfield Road".

Did you notice that Lake Boone Trail takes over a portion of Edenburgh to jog over to Glenwood, where it suddenly becomes a service road for Glenwood Ave? The solution here is to rename the short part of Lake Boone Trail to something else, and rename Cambridge Dr. to "Edenburgh Rd."

Areas like this are giving Raleigh a terrible image to newcomers. They understandably feel that we native Raleighites are either stuck up or plain ol’ stupid. Neither is the case. Clarity trumps all, friends!!!

You are right the Lake Boone Trail thing is CRAZY…
Yarmouth #1 should not be called Chesterfield…not even the same street. Chesterfield has a stop sign and tee’s into a driveway. (mine) If this is not an indication that they are TWO different streets…then…um….I don’t know.
Yarmouth #1 and Yarmouth #2 is silly and ONE of them should be renamed…oh and we were her first! WHY did they name Yarmouth #2 Yarmouth? That is silly.
    Oh and Go Cavs!!!

We have it easy here with the road-names “problem” – I recently found the whole lake boone trail shenanigan, btw.- But back home in Clear Lake City TX…we had several roads that were regularly interrupted by city blocks. Redway Lane, for example existed in about 8 different sections. Come to a tee intersection, go half-way around the block, and there’s another section. Just had to share, just found the site. Look forward to visiting more often.

    Wow, Don. You are right.

I know I see 3 Redways in this frame. I really don’t understand how a city can tolerate multiple street names.
On another topic, Jay Leno said that some residents of a Hooker Lane (in some American city) have petitioned the city to change the name. He suggests “Sleazy Hoar Blvd”.

    Raleigh’s filled with oddities.
Notice the number of streets that stop, then restart several blocks away, totally unconnected:
    Clark Avenue
    Lane Street
    Cabarrus Street
    North Street
    Wake Forest Road
    Crabtree Blvd
    Mayview Road
    State Street
    Lee Street
    Fayetteville Street
    West Street
Probably several others but those are just some that I’ve ran into in my ten years here. It can drive a newcomer insane.

Some of you people should learn the facts before you go complaining about something. Don’t you know it’s better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you’re an idiot than to open your mouth and remove all doubt? I’m not going to do your homework for you but I’ll just advice you to learn how block numbers work. Once you figure this out, then you’ll understand why those streets are named the way they are. No, it’s not as easy as just changing the name of a street.
